TOYOTA SHOWS OFF WITH ITS TOYOTA GR SUPERSPORT HYPERCAR AT LA MANS | CARS NEWS | AUTO REPORTER

TOYOTA GR SUPERSPORT HYPERCAR

This year's 24 Hours of Le Mans was all of Toyota. Again. For the third time in a row, the Japanese brand Toyota wins at the famous French endurance race. But Toyota didn't merely make news for winning the race. The company made sure to take the spotlight before the green flag fell by publicly showing off a forthcoming hypercar prototype, the GR Super Sport. This year's World Endurance Championship calendar was jumbled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and next year's schedule will be made up of six events rather than the eight that were earlier on the list. The FIA says the program could change again, based on what occurs with the health crisis, but whenever things advance, Toyota will be ready.

Toyota first announced its road-going hybrid hypercar GR SuperSport in January 2018 and hitting the first video in 2019. Like in the race car, it's the continuity of a twin-turbocharged 2.4-liter V6. The THS-R hybrid system that provides the road-bound GR Super Sport about 1,000 horsepower all-wheel-drive kept glued to the road. Moreover, an aero package is only somewhat toned down in the name of real-world usability.

The Toyota GR Super Sport is based on the two times winner of Le Mans TS050 Hybrid Car. It is meant to take racing engineering from the track to the road. The catch for this concept GR Super Sport was that Toyota would engineer the GR Super Sport for the new LMH hypercar category, the new premier class for France endurance racing, and on-road use. In 2018, Toyota Gazoo Racing president Shigeki Tomoyama said Toyota would "develop sports cars from active race cars."

Though Toyota has not revealed the power train for Toyota GR Super Sport, we can guess from the TS050 Hybrid that GR Super Sport will have the following specifications.

Toyota GR Powertrain:-

Toyota will presumably use a hybrid powertrain with a mid-mounted, twin-turbocharged a 2.4-liter direct-injection V-6 engine and an Electric Motor that produces a total output of 986 horsepower.

Driving Toyota GR Super Sport in public for the first time, former Toyota driver Alex Wurz had this to say regarding the project:

"It was an honor to drive development version of the GR Super Sport for the first time in public, and particularly at a circuit like Le Mans, which is closely connected to Toyota GR Super Sport. Also, the GR Super Sport was born at Le Mans, so this felt like a homecoming. This was my first time driving the Toyota GR Super Sport, so a presentation lap doesn't allow me to push the limits. Still, I could already feel that the GR Super Sport can provide unbelievable accomplishment. I could feel the comparison between the GR Super Sport and the TS050 Hybrid in terms of performance, especially the four-wheel-drive and the hybrid system. But the engineers tell me this was only a small taste of the GR Super Sport's true appearance, so I am super thrilled to drive it again one day shortly."

Distending front and rear fenders, a pointed schnoz with a term for a proper Toyota badge, a wide frontal splitter, and a substantial rear wing all deliver the gasoline-electric hybrid Toyota GR Super Sport hypercar a smart look.

Toyota notes the GR Super Sport model presented at Le Mans is " as a convertible," leading us to believe the production model will sport a regular roof (as previewed by the GR Super Sport concept). If the driving position of Alex Wurz, who piloted the Toyota GR Super Sport around Le Mans, is anything to go by, then the cabin's headroom is sure to be restricted. The more than six-foot-tall Austrian driver's helmet noticeably crested the top of the Super Sport's windshield header.

For the GR Super Sport, Toyota said: "The GR Super Sport outlines Toyota Gazoo Racing's commitment to using motorsport to make better road cars for the enjoyment of customers, and it expresses a closer relationship between Toyota Gazoo Racing and road car products."

From what we've seen so far, more GR in Toyota road car products is an excellent thing. The GR Yaris (that isn't coming here) is a perfect example of what Toyota can do when it provides its engineering might. As for this car, it's going to have the near four-digit horsepower and a price tag that'll buy you many lifetimes of Mercedes Benz C Class.

We expect the production GR Super Sport to begin before next year's 24 Hours of Le Mans, with sales and deliveries anticipated to start not long after that. Whether the road-going race car officially sells in the United States, however, waits to be seen.
